This master's thesis research investigates how legislative schools in southern Minas
Gerais develop their citizenship education programs. The qualitative and descriptive study
involved documentary analysis of data from nine legislative schools of municipal
chambers in southern Minas Gerais. The text begins by presenting the author and their
motivations for choosing the topic, which is citizenship education within the scope of
legislative schools. The second section details the research design, addressing
citizenship education as a political exercise, discussing the study's objectives, its
relevance, and the organization of the text. The third section describes the methodology
used. Sections four and five focus on the bibliographic review and theoretical framework,
elucidating key concepts such as citizenship, citizenship education, non-formal education,
government schools, legislative education, and legislative schools. The sixth section
presents the collected data and its analysis. Interpretations are made considering theories
to achieve three specific objectives: to characterize the institutions, list their educational
activities, and analyze the educational intentionality of citizenship education. The final
considerations indicate that the studied legislative schools tend to focus more on
citizenship education than on other axes, such as the training of public agents. A tendency
was also observed to target students of basic education as the main audience, to the
detriment of other groups and sectors of society. The text concludes by presenting not
only the limits of the research and gaps for future investigations but also providing
indications and observations for the studied institutions.
