Abstract

This article seeks to evoke the original thoughts of Jean Jacques Rousseau, from the 18th century, who contributed to the formation of a model of State governed by the people, highlighting the essential importance of the Legislative Power in pro-posing laws that meet the general will and in promoting political participation through civic education. In Brazil, following the 1988 Constitution, the Legislative Houses began to promote children's civic education programs, such as the Câmara Mirim Program. Focusing on this theme, the research, of a bibliographic and documentary nature, analyzes the arrangements approved by the Municipal Council of Itapevi, in São Paulo, which created the Câmara do Vereador Mirim Project. The article presents theoretical and practical elements of the political ed-ucational program, applicable to all Municipal Chambers in Brazil, seeking to con-tribute with an information base for other academic works and add knowledge to studies of regional development and citizen education promoted by the Legislative Branch.
